We use the Nextgen plugin to display images on arts-festival.com, which is built using DynamiX. It’s been working fine for years, but I just updated the plugin and now there’s an issue with the filmstrip rendering. Specifically, when we go in to edit a page, it stops showing in preview and disappears after we save the changes. See http://arts-festival.com/artists/sculpture/paula-brown-steedly for example. Unchanged pages still appear fine, which may be due to the fact that we haven’t cleared the cache. See for example http://arts-festival.com/artists/ceramics/paula-brown-steedly.

I’ve made sure everything is in order in the backend and even reloaded the Nextgen filmstrip software (which is separate from the plugin), and the one page we changed is still broken. I think this may be an issue of compatibility between the updated plugin and the theme. Thoughts?

    Hi @denovati

Can you please send over your login credentials so we can personally test/check on this further from our end?

    Hi @denovati

I tried to edit this page http://arts-festival.com/artists/ceramics/paula-brown-steedly then previewed the page without making changes and I see the same error on the site, so it looks like it is indeed just server cache that is keeping the filmstrip from appearing on the page

This looks like an issue with the plugin which we do not support. Anyway, have you tried to disable all your plugins, leaving just the Nextgen plugins to check if any of them is causing the issue? Have you also coordinated this with Nextgen’s support?

Also, the gallery elements on Visual Composer, is a great alternative to use instead of Nextgen.

We have explored the gallery elements, and they lack the functionality we need to create pages like https://arts-festival.com/artists/ceramics. So does the portfolio functionality. Regardless, with over 300 artists we don’t have time to rebuild everything now anyway.

I am hesitant to clear the cache. I realize it could fix the one page that’s currently broken, but it could also break all the rest of them. I”m also hesitant to disable the plugins as this site is live and receiving hundreds of visits daily (and more each day as the festival approaches). We’ve tried without success to clone the site in a test environment so we only have a live site. Besides, the filmstrip is the only thing not working…

I have not contacted Nextgen support yet. Since the theme hasn’t been updated in almost a year and a recent plugin update seemed to cause the problem, I figured it was incompatibility between the plugin and the theme. And since the theme is less current than the plugin, I started with the theme as the possible source of the problem. Everything worked fine until the plugin update…

    Hi @denovati

There are many possibilities as to what may have caused the issue, including incompatibility with the theme, and the only way to isolate this would be to disable plugins or switch themes.

Using Chrome Dev Tools while the page is open does not show any error so we can particularly figure out what’s causing the issue. Try to check your server/site’s error logs to check if there’s any trace of the issue there.

If there isn’t, I am afraid disabling plugins and switching the theme is the best way to isolate the issue further.

    Hi Edcel.

I just switched to the 2016 theme and the gallery slideshow appeared on both pages. Then when I switched back to DynamiX, http://arts-festival.com/artists/ceramics/paula-brown-steedly broke as well (with a different error – message says not a valid template). Other pages are still working (e.g., https://arts-festival.com/artists/ceramics/rhonda-cearlock), but that could be thanks to the cache. Based on your latest feedback it seems there is a definite incompatibility issue with the theme.

I also found this related thread on wp.org: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/slideshow-gallery-not-displaying-after-upgrade/#post-8946258. All of it is beyond my technical understanding, but perhaps you can make sense of it.

    Hi @denovati

Based on the feedback on https://wordpress.org/support/topic/slideshow-gallery-not-displaying-after-upgrade/#post-8946258 , the issue is triggered by how the new version of the plugin fetches the images.

It also looks like this is not isolated to just our theme because a number of their customers have complained about it. The best option is to report the issue to them so they can look into the issue then roll your site back to an older version of the plugin for the gallery to work again.

    Regards,
