I have a filtered post masonry page http://fscbmwcca.com/informed/.
The category “Interests” shows up but it is not a subset of the “Informative” category on which the post-masonry is created. See settings here https://s1.postimg.org/7gcn8gk1yn/post-masonry-grid.jpg I
The filters displayed on the page are: 2002, BMW, BMW CCA, Die Sonne Küeste, Foundation, From Our Members, From Your Board, FSC Weekly, General, Maintenance, Interests, Member Cars, Motorsports, Newsworthy, Roundel Weekly
The bolded items do not appear in the category structure.
But this is the category structure:
— — BMW CCA
— — — Foundation
— — — News From National
— — — Roundel Weekly
— Die Sonne Küeste
— From Our Members
— — Member Cars
— From Your Board
— FSC Weekly
Similarly I have another filtered post masonry http://fscbmwcca.com/our-archives/. These are the filters on the page show: 2002, Autocrosses, AutoX Results, BMW, Concours/Auto Shows, Driving Tours, From Our Members, FSC Weekly, Interests, Member Cars, Motorsports, Naples/Ft Myers Meetings, Newsworthy, Racing, Rallies, Socials, Tampa Meetings, Tech Session
This is the category structure (note the items in bold above do not appear on this list):
— Car Control Clinics
— Concours/Auto Shows
— Driving Schools
— Driving Tours
— Flickr Galleries
— — Naples/Ft Myers Meetings
— — Tampa Meetings
— — Autocrosses
— — — AutoX Results
— Tech Session
Can you help with this?

I checked and the behavior is indeed pretty weird.
Can you please give us permission to disable your plugins so we can test this further from our end?
I have tried to disable all plugins and the issue persists.
Anyway, looking at this further, I think what is happening here is that the category which should is not part of the main category are connected via another category under the main category.
Both posts are also categorized under FSC Weekly which is under “Informed”. This could be why they appear on the category filter because of the common category under the main category, which creates a false-positive on the supposed excluded category.
One option is to remove them from FSC Weekly. IF not, you can try to remove the main category as filter and use the specific subcategories instead.
