    Hi –

I have noticed that even when I upload images to a /uploads date folder like 2014/10 etc, when I use the image in a Grid (maybe other gallery types), that an image of the same name but with an alphanumeric suffix, gets created in the root uploads directory. These files then seem to be used. Why is this and what are these files created by. I ask as it is duplicating storage on my webserver, and the files is creates are large.

For example from my front page on julieadolan.com you can see the uploaded file and the newly created file.

    src file = http://www.julieadolan.com/wp-content/uploads/Grazing-Cowboy-2xr3hz4idja8zbd62ilzb4.jpg
    Href Link = http://www.julieadolan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Grazing-Cowboy.jpg

Can someone help explain this. It is making my site load slow I believe.

    Hi Al,

This is the image resizer doing this. Basically, it creates a copy of the image and displays it in the exact size that it should be shown in on the page.

    For example,
If your original image was 1000px wide, and your gallery size was 400px wide, loading the original image would be a strain on your server, the users internet connection and the page speed would greatly suffer.
This is why the image resizer only loads in the 400px wide image on the page, then links out to the original if needs be. For quick page load and less server usage.

You can turn this off within Appearance > Theme Options > General > Image Resizer > OFF.

    Hope this helps.
